Gerbils are great pets - they’re fun, cute, and endlessly entertaining. They’re relative newcomers to the pet market, but cuteness, tameness, and ease-of-care have made them hugely popular across the world.

Gerbils are popular pets in the US and beyond
However, before you bring some of these little creatures home, there are some questions you need to consider:
- Do you have the time to look after a pair of gerbils properly? They need regular feeding and hand-taming.
- Do you have the funds to look after gerbils properly? They’ll need a good enclosure and regular shop-bought gerbil food. And there may be occasional vet bills to factor in, too.
- Who you are buying the pet for? Experts and animal welfare organizations all agree that young children are not able to care for a gerbil properly, and even at eleven or twelve years old, kids will need adult supervision to make sure they are feeding the pet twice a day and cleaning them out once a week.
