The name 'hamster' derives from the German word for a hoarder: ‘hamstern’. It refers to the animal's habit of hoarding food, whether in its cheek pouches, or in its nest. These kleptomaniac tendencies serve a practical purpose in the wild, where hamsters spend most of heir waking hours collecting food when there’s lots around, and storing it for harder times.
Hamsters are great hoarders of food
This survival instinct doesn't abandon pet hamsters, no matter how much food there is all year round. You'll regularly find stashes of food that your pet has carefully collected and hoarded, in and around their cage, nesting box and enclosure.
