- Christopher,
Great layers of brilliant blue eggs and a good feed:egg conversion ratio and lay an extaordinary number of eggs their first two years. The birds are smaller framed, vary in color and feather patterns, and often (like many other smaller framed birds and animals) are flighty and easily scared of anything they are not familiar with. However, if you attain these birds as day old chicks and handle them daily for the first few months of their life they will imprint on you as the chicken tender and tolerate you as their unruly pet human. The one trait I have found with this breed consistently is they are not tolerant of poorly mannered flock mate and will around 18-20 months of age evolve into the great-aunt of the new chicks brought into the flock as a disciplinarian, and will not tolerate any chicken in your flock showing aggression to you and those she accepts as her own.
- Delia,
I have had different breeds in the past but I love my Ameraucanas they get along with each other and the other breeds. Any roosters that had are pretty agreeable, and I love all the different colors of feathers I can always tell who I’m talking too.
My favorite breed so far - Randy, New York,
I have had four different breeds before I got the Ameraucana. as chicks, they were the shyest of any breed I had had. It took them a while to warm up to me. But by the time they reached adulthood, the rooster used to sit on my knee and eat mealworms out of my hand. It was the only rooster that didn’t get nasty With me. I love the fact that they are all different colors. That made it easy to individualize them and know which one was which. They are sweet and friendly, my favorite breed so far!
